Woiwurrung Table, 2023

With a shape inspired by the Woiwurrung region this unique table is a testament to the people who have inhabited the region for over 40,000 years. The hand carving across the top represents the differing elements of the region, from the wetlands of pre-European settlement to the growth of community and air that represents life and healthy living.
Across the edge the iconic Yarra River is represented by the flowing waters carving. The hand-carved base is finished and stained to represent the renewal and growth that comes after a bushfire.

Four craftsmen spent over 300 hours planning and crafting this inspiring piece at Manapan’s workshop on Milingimbi Island in Arnhem Land, located in Australia’s Northern Territory. Central to the construction is a top of exquisite ‘Darwin Stringy Bark’ Timber, partnered with a Black Butt timber hand carved base. The expert craftsmanship and skills of Manapan’s Yolngu team is clear on display in the detail, and the artwork. This unique table is 3.6 meters long and 1 meter wide. This table was wholly constructed on Milingimbi island and then transported to its new home by sea and land.

Yolngu - The Traditional Custodians of East Arnhem Land. With a history of over 65,000 years in the region, they have a deep connection, respect and understanding of the land. Yolngu have a rich, creative, and industrious history, having traded with the Macassan and Chinese for over 500 years before European settlement in Australia.
